Type Locality and Naming
Junggar Basin. M. H. Saidov erected the Tugulu series in 1935. The type locality for the designation is on the southern edge of the Junggar basin of Xinjiang and at the northern foot of the east Tianshan Mountain. The reference section is at Ziniquanzi of the Shawan County of Xinjiang.
Upward succession of Qingshuihe Fm, Hutubihe Fm, Shenjinkou Fm, Lianmuqin Fm in Junggar Basin; or of Sanshilidadun Fm, Shenjinkou Fm, Lianmuqin Fm in Turpan Basin.
Lithology and Thickness
The Tugulu Group is represented by brown red, gray green and yellow green variegated interbedded mudstone, sandy mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, with the base being made up of conglomerate.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base marked by gray conglomerate lies disconformably on the Upper Jurassic Karaza Fm.
Upper contact
Its top marked by brown red sandy mudstone and clayey siltstone and sandstone is distinguished from the overlying Donggou Fm and shows a disconformable contact with the latter.
Regional extent
It is distributed in the Junggar basin and the Turpan-Hami basins.
